Texas Mutual Ins Company had a casino night and we all had a little luck and
we were drawn for the grand prize of $500.00.

The following is a quote from The Texas Surplus Lines Reporter and Insurance News regarding the level of losses (claims) related to Hurricane Ian.
“As far as losses go, it’s too early to determine the final cost of Hurricane Ian, but in London insurer and reinsurers expect a loss of between $40 billion and $60 billion. As if this isn’t enough to make underwriters’ eyes water, they still have the losses from Hurricane Nicole to look forward to. No one is willing to predict just how high renewal rates will go, but even the Wall Street Journal speculated on rises between 20 percent and 30 percent. Part of London believes rates will be higher.”
I have been an agent for almost 31 years and upward pressure on homeowners rates is the most I can remember.

Today we celebrated the Astros by some of our team members wearing their jersey’s. We have lunch brought in every Friday to celebrate our team and NOT talk about work!
We ordered Chinese from Eastern on 34th in Houston it was YUMMY!
Recently we introduced a new benefit to our staff! Each Friday one of the staff leaves at 12:00 with pay! This way our team has time to do those things they cannot get done while they are at work! They
can also enjoy brunches with friends or spend time with the family! We felt that this was a really nice way to show our appreciation to our staff. Work life Balance!

On March 7th it will be 2 years since Debra Johnson received her Texas Insurance license. She has done a terrific job at bringing quality new accounts to our agency. She had a long career in the hotel business, but she was very happy to not still be there this past year. Congrats to you Debra!!!!!!!!!!
"I am so excited to celebrate 2 years as your trusted agent! It has been a great second career choice ( I said I wouldn’t be that person in her 50’s to switch gears, but here we are)!! I am happy everyday to go to work, help our clients, meet new clients and know that I am making a difference for those that need our assistance." - Debra |

We moved out of the offices of the independent agency I had been working for and started this agency. We have about three times as many clients as we had in 2008. We have 7 full time staff, 2 semi-retired producers and 2 part time social media assistants. We are very lucky and happy to have the great clientele we have!!
Thank you all very much, Doug Johnson.

At the beginning of this year’s short Major League Baseball season we bought an Astros cutout for our granddaughter Karlee. The cutouts only cost $100 and all of the money went to charities that the Astros support.
Even though it has Debra's name the picture is of our granddaughter. Now that the season is over we got to pick it up today and we will be giving it to Karlee this weekend.
Go Astros!!!

Today our Travelers Sales Executive, Renee Romeo, brought all of the staff a lunch from Aladdin’s Mediterranean Grill. This was a reward luncheon we had earned in March, but due to all of the “craziness” we had to wait until now to have the lunch.
All of us like Aladdin’s and we have been there several times for group luncheons.
We also were honored with the “S.T.A.R. Award” from Travelers. S.T.A.R. stands for Superior Travelers Agency Recognition. We are the only agency in Renee’s group to receive the award. She handles over 100 agency’s for Travelers, so we are very honored.
I have always believed that having good relationships with insurance companies benefits our clients. Also placing good clients with our companies benefits the insurance companies.
Thank you to all!

This week Doug, Debra, and Laura traveled to Austin for the annual Joe Vincent Conference put on by the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas. We had the opportunity to attend classes, network with our peers, and, of course, eat some great food! SafeCo hosted several of the agents to a dinner cruise on Lake Austin and Travelers took Doug and Debra to dinner at EddieV’s. Laura and her husband, Al, were hosted by McClelland & Hine, they enjoyed a meal at Truluck's. We ended the conference with a lunch hosted by State Auto. Thanks to all our company partners!
One of the presentations was a mock trial during the conference pictured here. As you can see even though the conference was in Austin the photographer was a fan of Doug's Texas A&M shoes!

Debra and I recently attended the annual IIAT’s summer convention that is held annually in different cities in Texas. This year it was at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine Tx between Dallas and Ft Worth. There were many interesting and educational sessions, networking with other agents and insurance company representatives and several social events. On the final day we had a brunch and Roger Staubach was the keynote speaker. Even though I was always a Houston Oiler fan it was very interesting to hear his football stories and his business stories.

Doug has recently took the courses required to receive the TIIA (Texas Independent Insurance Adviser) designation. The Texas Independent Insurance Adviser (TIIA) designation program addresses the challenges of insuring Texas consumers due to the complexity of Texas forms and regulations..The TIIA designation denotes an advanced level of knowledge and expertise. TIIA designees will have a keener understanding of regulations and insurance issues enabling them to provide the most accurate technical assistance and superior customer service. |

We were excited to participate in a local cook off recently. Teams gathered together to present their best efforts at appetizers, desserts, gumbo, and ribs. It was a great day to spend in the community and with family.

The media always scares us and asks:
Do you have hurricane coverage?
The answer for most of us with a homeowners policy is (probably) YES!
Only in the "First Tier" of counties in Texas are the insurance carriers allowed to exclude wind coverage in the standard policies. In order to obtain wind coverage we can provide a policy though 'Texas Wind Storm Insurance association' (TWIA).
In the "Second Tier" of counties in Texas and those farther inland the wind coverage is included on almost all of the homeowners policies.
An exception to this rule is if you had a "Surplus Lines" homeowners policy.
If you have a surplus lines policy, it would have taxes and fees shown on the Declaration Page. There would also be a surplus lines notice as one of the first pages of the policy packet.
For most of us with standard insurance homeowners policies hurricane and hail would be included in the policy.
Please call us if you have any questions about your coverage.
The tan in the picture attached shows First Tier counties.

* WHY BUY FLOOD INSURANCE NOW?
HURRICANE SEASON IS AROUND THE CORNER AND THERE IS A 30 DAY WAITING PERIOD!
No home is completely safe from potential flooding. Most residents have to pay out of pocket or take out loans to repair and replace damaged items. Just one inch of water in a home can cost more than $25,000 in damage. Flood insurance reduces the financial burden of a flood event and makes it easier to make your house a home again.
Why risk it?
Here are some important facts to keep in mind:
DON'T WAIT ANY LONGER GIVE US A CALL TO INSURE YOU HAVE FLOOD COVERAGE AND IF NEEDED GET A NEW FLOOD POLICY IN PLACE!

Leslie recently passed her licensing test! She is now officially Licensed by the Texas department of Insurance!!!
Here are her thoughts about the process-
It is so exciting to have the insurance license in place! It just felt like a burden to think that I had to pass a test. The great thing was that I felt prepared, due to my boss paying for Kaplan classes to walk me through the whole Property and Casualty Insurance Licensing Exam Book. Kaplan has great teachers that make the book more understandable, but my experience with the test was not so pleasant. The test covered everything that was in the book, but the questions were confusing if not read three times or more. It was a lot of hard work and required focus and attention to details. I am glad to say that, finally, the test was passed and I can not wait to continue to learn new things!
Congratulations to Leslie!

February 10th, 2018 is Douglas B Johnson Insurance Agency's anniversary. We have made much progress from the first week we moved into our offices at the Wells Fargo building on 290 and 43rd. We had to arrange the office very quickly and it has worked out very well for our agency.
There are now 6 of us full time in the agency. We also have 3 others (my 2 daughters and wife) who assist with our website, artwork, social media and other functions on a part time basis.
We added 2 small offices to our suite so that we will be able to accommodate future growth. We have been in the offices at 2190 North Loop West for almost 7 years.
So thank you to all of our clients and congratulations to all of our staff on our tenth anniversary!
We appreciate you all,
Douglas B Johnson

We remind everyone to pay extra attention to school zones, give extra time on your morning commute, and, for our clients with school aged children, take care not to post information about your child's school and don't add the location for any pictures of your children to social media. We want everyone to have a great school year ahead!

It is easy to hide behind a quick tweet, instagram, or Facebook message, especially when we are frustrated by scenarios from businesses. The article below details the insurance aspects that go into libel, slander, or defamation claims in these situations that are becoming more frequent each day. While there could be coverage (call us for details on your policy) in some cases, most homeowners do NOT automatically include coverage for these exposures, and it is better to talk through concerns with a manager. Like the article says, “Don’t tweet it, Facebook it, Yelp it or say it if you don’t want to defend it in court.”

On March 4th, Doug and Colton attended the IIAT's "Big I Legislative Day" in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the event was to meet with State Legislators in the capital to discuss insurance issues currently being considered in this legislative session as well as any other issues Independent Agents would like to see addressed. After viewing several associations be honored in the House Gallery and giving us time to drop in to a few Representative's offices, IIAT held a BBQ luncheon at their headquarters across the street where legislators were invited to attend. By the end of the day Doug and Colton were able to meet with 2 State Representatives, 2 Representative aides and 2 Senate aides to discuss issues where we'd like to see change.
One of the issues that Doug and Colton discussed with various State Legislators in the Capital was Named Driver Insurance policies. A Named Driver policy covers only the persons listed on the ID Card, versus a conventional policy that generally covers all household drivers not otherwise excluded. We met with two Representatives who have both authored proposed bills to either eliminate or alter the way these policies are structured. They said their biggest hurdle has been the inability to find a Senator to carry the bill, but that they will continue to fight for this important issue.

On Tuesday Laura went to a Commercial Property Exposures Insurance class offered by Independent Insurance Agents of Texas and took away the following:
*I learned that an annual review/appraisal should be done by commercial property owners and business owners due to Betterments and Improvements that may have increased the value of their property. This would assure that the insured and insurance company properly insure the value of the building thus avoiding problems with coinsurance that could appear at the time of a loss.
Coinsurance is when you do not obtain the proper amount of insurance for your property and will then share the loss with the insurance company. You are a Coinsurer.

Doug attended his 8th Joe Vincent Management Seminar held in Austin here are some of Dougs notes about his time:
On Monday morning at the IIAT's Joe Vincent conference we had a very good speaker named Eric Chester who spoke about taking care of your employees, and they will in turn take care of your customers. I already believe this and it is very helpful to have more ideas about how to inspire your staff to pamper our clients. We were also privileged to a very interesting talk by W. R. Berkley who was very entertaining and it was a treat to hear him speak. He bought his first insurance company in 1967. The newly appointed Texas Insurance Commissioner also spoke for a few minutes. He was just recently appointed by our, also new, Texas Governor.
The Joe Vincent conference was over around noon on Tuesday. I went to our state capital and visited with three state Representatives' offices and was able to speak to the Representative for our own office in the Oak Forest area, Jessica Farrar. She was very open to my comments. I also visited the office of our State Senator, John Whitmire. One of the issues that I am very concerned about is the issue of “Named Driver” auto policies, I will discuss further in a following post. Another issue has to do with The City of Houston pension problems. All of the staff at each office was very interested in what I had to share. I rounded out the day with a visit to our beautiful capital building and took a few photos

Mitch Brown from American Bankers Flood came by our office 10/14. He discussed various changes & improvements yet to come by the company, whose parent company is Assurant Specialty. American Bankers is a Fortune 500 company, and is the 2nd largest flood company in the country. We look forward to writing much more flood business through them!
All of the rain brings to mind the first session Doug attended at the IIAT Small Agency Conference. There have been changes made to Flood Insurance with the 2014 Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Act and this session discussed those changes and how it effects our clients. Please call if you have any questions over your policy or if you would like a quote for a new policy.
One of the sessions from the Small Agency Conference that Doug attended last week was a comparison of Auto Policy Differences. Because we are able to write through different companies who all have some subtle and some larger differences, being diligent about knowing what is and is not covered on a policy is crucial for our business.

We've Been In Business For 5 Years!
Dear Friends,
On the occasion of our 5th Anniversary of having our own agency (Again!), I wanted to thank you for your business and the referrals you have sent our way over the years.
We appreciate and understand the trust you place in our service when you send us your clients, friends, families or co-workers. We do our best every day to provide prompt professional service.
Since we moved from Instex Insurance Agency, we have made much progress in our operations, knowledge and service capabilities.
We have five personnel, including myself and we are all licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance. One of our goals everyday is to have no phone calls go to voice mail during the business day.
We have continued to improve the safety, security and reliability of our information technology and our computer systems.
By the end of this year, our total premium volume should be well over $2,500,000, this places us in a good position to continue the ongoing improvements in our overall operations.
I could go on and on, because I am quite proud of what we all have been able to accomplish, even during a difficult financial environment.
So I want to say again, THANK YOU! Thank you for your support, encouragement and the trust of your business and that of your referrals.
Please let us know how we may better assist you.
